The High Power Microwave Division designs, builds, and tests high power microwave (HPM) systems. A critical support element for this activity is modeling the physics occurring within the power systems, HPM sources, and antennas.

The High Power Microwave Division uses ICEPIC, a particle-in-cell code, to model these HPM sources. With support from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Office, the High Power Microwave Division has successfully applied ICEPIC to advancing the capabilities of multiple HPM sources.

Fast, efficient results from the ICEPIC (Improved Concurrent Electromagnetic Particle In Cell) code are key to the Air Force Research Laboratory’s efforts to design high power microwave sources for electronic warfare and non-lethal weaponry. Parallelization of ICEPIC allows the use of DoD supercomputer assets to perform device simulations which would previously have been impossible, and also to obtain these results quickly, with little waste of expensive CPU resources.

Axsys Technologies Precision Machined Products, Cullman, Alabama produces close tolerance exotic and conventional material components and flat optics for the space, defense and nuclear power generation markets. Axsys is the world's largest manufacturer of beryllium and beryllium containing components and products. Our products are used in a variety of applications including the James Webb Space Telescope, NPOESS, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, F-22, GOES, Minuteman III, Trident II, M1A2 Abrams Tank and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

Axsys has built the beryllium reflector blocks and associated hardware for a number of nuclear reactors worldwide since the mid-1970’s. Axsys is currently working with the Joint European Torus (JET), to produce the beryllium protection tiles for the ITER-Like Wall to be installed on the current fusion reactor.

The JET Facility machine is a large experimental device that forms part of the European Fusion Program. Its aim is to confine and study the behavior of plasma in conditions and dimensions approaching those required for a fusion reactor. The plasma is created in the toroidally shaped vacuum vessel of the machine in where it is confined by magnetic fields. Although the power is exhausted mainly in the diverter, a considerable fraction of the power is radiated and convected to the inner surface of the vessel, which at present is protected by a series of tiles made from carbon-carbon fiber components. For the ITER-Like Wall that will be installed on JET, there will be no carbon facing the plasma. This will be achieved by making the majority of the protection tiles from beryllium.

ACTIVE DENIAL SYSTEM
Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration

What is It? The Active Denial System (ADS) is a counterpersonnel, nonlethal, directed energy weapon.

The technology was originally developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory and matured under the sponsorship of the Department of Defense’s Joint NonLethal Weapons Directorate. The ADS will provide our warfighters an extraordinary new capability – a nonlethal weapon with a range greater than traditional small arms.

The ADS projects a focused beam of millimeter waves to induce an intolerable heating sensation on an adversary’s skin, repelling the individual without causing injury. This capability will add to the ability to stop, deter and turn back an advancing adversary, providing an option to lethal force. The ADS’ nonlethal capabilities are designed to protect the innocent, minimize fatalities, and limit collateral damage.

How Does It Work? Active Denial Technology produces millimeter waves at a frequency of 95gigahertz and uses an antenna to direct a focused, invisible beam toward a designated subject. Traveling at the speed of light, the energy strikes the subject and reaches a skin depth of about 1/64 of an inch, or the equivalent of three sheets of paper. It produces a heat sensation that within seconds becomes intolerable and forces the targeted individual to instinctively flee. The sensation immediately ceases when the individual moves out of the beam or when the operator turns off the system.

The ADS has been the subject of an extensive test program that has been conducted in strict compliance with the procedures, laws, and regulations governing animal and human research. The tests have been reviewed and approved by a formal Institutional Review Board with oversight from the Air Force Surgeon General’s Office.

The mission of the DIII-D Research Program is to establish the scientific basis for the optimization of the tokamak approach to fusion energy production. The DIII-D Program is a cornerstone element in the national fusion program strategy.

The DIII-D Program is a large international program, with 90 participating institutions and a research team of 515 users. General Atomics operates DIII-D for the Department of Energy through the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences as a true user facility. DIII-D research has been recognized a record four times with the American Physical Society Excellence in Plasma Physics Prize.

General Atomics has been conducting magnetic fusion research since the 1960s and has been a pioneer in the toroidal magnetic confinement device called a tokamak. More specifically, this work has been with non-circular cross-section tokamaks including Doublet II and Doublet III and today with DIII-D. This early work led to the creation of similar machines worldwide, such as JET (U.K.), TCV (Switzerland), Asdex (Germany), and JT-60 (Japan).

ITER, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, is a worldwide fusion effort and will be built in France. DIII-D with its non-circular cross-section and versatile experimental capability has had a profound impact on the redesign of ITER, including the development of the physics basis for key ITER issues and advanced ITER operation.

Research on DIII-D is open to proposals from all countries with which the DOE has a cooperative agreement. Worldwide, a total of 451 research proposals were received for the 2004-2005 research campaign. Funding-constrained runtime means about 100 research proposals can get time in any year; hence, the research backlog is generally about 4 years.

Electrical & Computer Engineering Department

(Booth 203)

The University of New Mexico is actively involved with research in pulsed power and plasma science within its Electrical and Computer Engineering Department.

UNM has ongoing collaborations with New Mexico’s national labs and with local hightech industry. Research is conducted by faculty and graduate students in four laboratories in the department as well as on site at Sandia National Laboratories, the Air Force Research Lab, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. Many of our students find jobs at New Mexico’s federal labs after graduation. Graduate research assistantships are available.

More information about ECE's Pulsed Power and Plasma Science Program can be found here.

"Exciting Times for Us"

"If engineering is the science and art of solving problems, then these are exciting times for us," says ECE Chair Chaouki Abdallah in his introduction to the department's just published annual report.

"Looking for better ways to convert energy, to safeguard and maintain our various infrastructures, and to improve the physical and mental health of our population are challenges that cry out for collaborations and ingenuity across all disciplines.

"Our future engineers will be leaders of multidisciplinary teams that work across continents and areas of expertise to chip away at these formidable challenges."

History of ECE

The popularity of electrical engineering courses in 1904, coupledwith the demand for programs in engineering fields other than electrical, led to the creation of the School of Engineering in 1906.

In 1956, the Electrical Engineering Departmentbegan a Doctor of Science degree-granting program.

In 1986, construction was completed on the new ECE building. Officials used a laser for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The building houses research labs for such things as robotics, hearing aid research and artificial intelligence. The Centennial Science and Engineering library is also located in part of the 2-story underground portion of the building.

In 1995, several ECE professors received teaching awards, a testament to the emphasis on teaching in the department.

Today, the ECE department continues to command nationwide recognition and respect--a direct result of over ninety years of history on the University of New Mexico campus.
